M13 Globular Cluster in Hercules

Is considered the finest 'Glob' in the northern hemisphere, second only to the magnificent Omega Centauri of the south. It was discovered by Edmond Halley in 1714 (comet fame) in the Keystone of Hercules. Over 30,000 individual stars have been counted but the total is about 1,000,000. Its distance from earth is estimated at 20,000 light years and its diameter, 160 light years across. About 100 'Globs' of similar appearance surround our galaxy. They are ancient travelers, billions of years old and comprised of mostly metal-deficient stars near the end of their life.
