The Cigar M82 in Ursa Major
was discovered by Bode, and is a partner of M81 at a distance of eleven million light years from us. Called an irregular galaxy, the core shows violent starburst and dark lanes, first observed by Lord Rosse. These are a result of a close encounter with M81. In infrared light and X-Ray, it is the brightest galaxy in the sky. The data was acquired by David Plesko. Click the image for a larger version or return to the Gallery
