The Flying Saucer NGC 4565 in Coma Berenices

was discovered by the great William Herschel in 1785.  A classic, edge-on spiral I think it's one of the most spectacular of galaxies.  It has eluded me for many years but now I have her and offer it for your enjoyment.  4565 lies a staggering 50,000,000 light years from this island Earth.  Though one of the favorite spring galaxies, there is precious little written about the Flying Saucer or 'Needle Galaxy' as some call it.  You should be able to count an additional five galaxies in the field.  Return to the Gallery
