Comet Holmes 17/P
This fascinating tail-less comet was discovered in 1892 by English astronomer Edwin Holmes during a routine observation of M31 the Andromeda Galaxy. In 2007 as in 1892 an explosion occurred in the nucleus making it so bright that it was clearly visible to the naked eye. Beginning in October 2007 it became one of the constellation Perseus' brightest 'stars' for weeks. This photograph is a composite of two different exposure sets- one optimized for the nucleus and a longer exposure time which revealed the green coma. Return to the Gallery
