The Jellyfish and Sharpless 249 Nebulae

Picture
IC 443 and Sh 2-249 in Gemini

are an interesting and diverse pair. Flanked by two bright stars, Mu and Eta Geminorum, the Jellyfish is the brighter arc of emission at upper-left, while the larger cloud towards bottom-right is Sharpless 249. Sh 2-249 is an emission nebula, while the Jellyfish is a bubble-shaped supernova remnant- the expanding debris cloud of a massive exploded star. The presence of a neutron star is the remnant of the collapsed stellar core. A starless version appears below. Many thanks to my friend Terry Hancock of Grand Mesa Observatory for providing me this fine data.
