Billions and Billions.com/Rho Ophiuchi
The Rho Ophiuchi Region near Scorpius
This exquisite swath of Milky Way is located dead center of our galaxy, between Scorpius and the lesser-known constellation Ophiuchus the snake handler. Surrounded by beautiful blue reflection nebulosity, Rho-Ophiuchi is the triple star system at far right. Antares, the bright orange star at upper-left center is responsible for the gorgeous plumes and dust lanes which dominate the field. Added bonuses are the globular cluster M4 below Antares and the lovely pink SH2-9 nebula (Sharpless Catalog) slightly to its right. The image was acquired by my friend Brent Maynard during our trip to the 2010 Winter Star Party and he was gracious enough to ask me to process the data for us. The image appeared in IDA's Nightscape magazine in 2011. Return to the Gallery
