The Eta Carinae Nebula
NGC 3372 in Carina
is a huge, complex area of bright and dark nebulosity in the constellation Carina, located in the Carina–Sagittarius Arm of the Milky Way galaxy.
The nebula is approximately 8,500 light-years from Earth and is one of the largest diffuse nebulae in the heavens.
Although it is four times bigger, and brighter than the Orion Nebula, it's less well known due to its location in the southern hemisphere.
It was discovered by Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille in 1752 from the Cape of Good Hope.
A young star cluster, Trumpler 16, is home to the central Wolf-Rayet star, WR 25, the most luminous star in our Milky Way galaxy.
This image was captured and preprocessed by my friend, Richard Payne on his recent trip to Namibia.
