M74 Galaxy
M74 in Pisces
is an Sc-type, face-on spiral galaxy. Also designated NGC 628, it was discovered by Pierre Méchain in 1780. The brightest member of the M74 Group, which bears its name, it is 35,000,000 light years from Earth. M74 is considered a 'Grand Design' galaxy, for its classic and symmetrical spiral shape. Even at this resolution, many pink, HII star forming knots (nebulae) can be seen in its interior blue arms.
