NGC 1532 and 1531 Galaxies
An Interacting Pair in Eridanus
was discovered by James Dunlop in 1826, and is located about 55,000,000 light-years away, and spans about 200,000 light-years. The mass of the large galaxy, NGC 1532 is estimated to be slightly greater than our own Milky Way. Also known as Haley's Coronet, its structure is an irregular, barred spiral type, SB(s)b pec. The much smaller dwarf galaxy, NGC 1531 appears directly to the right of the larger one at 3 o'clock, and the two are locked in a gravitational struggle, which the smaller galaxy will eventually lose, being 'cannibalized' by the larger. Intense pink star-forming HII regions line the central dust lane. NGC 1532 and 1531 are part of a larger galaxy group that includes at least one other dwarf galaxy (9 and 12 o'clock) in the field of view. NGC 1531 is likened to our own satellite galaxy, the Large Magellanic Cloud. The luminance data was acquired by SSRO, and comprised a version that appeared as a 2019 APOD by Dr. Steve Mazlin.
