NGC 2438 Nebula
NGC 2438 in Puppis
is a multi-shelled planetary nebula with a bright inner core. There are also two, somewhat detached dim shells.
At a distance of 1,370 light-years, it formed only about 4,000 years ago, and was discovered by William Herschel in 1786.
With a surface temperature of about 135,000° F, the central star is one of the hottest stars known.
At 10 o'clock is a fascinating little (red) protoplanetary nebula designated OH 231.8+4.2, or the Calabash Nebula.
Many thanks go out to my collaborator and friend, Mike Selby, who acquired and calibrated this fine Ha/OIII data.
