The Spaghetti Nebula
Sh2-240 in Auriga
also known as Simeis 147, is a supernova remnant (SNR) in our Milky Way galaxy.
A rapidly spinning neutron star, pulsar PSR J0538+2817 lies at the nebula's core.
Also straddling the constellation of Taurus the bull, it was discovered in 1952 by Crimean Astronomer,
Grigory Shajn and his team. The nebula has a near-spherical shell and lovely filamentary structure.
At a distance of 3,000 light-years, and an age of 40,000 years, it spans 160 light-years across.
Many thanks to my collaborator, Lee Skrobot for capturing and preprocessing the data,
and to UK's Astronomy Now magazine for choosing it as October 2023's Picture of the Month!
